DRINKING FROM THE WATER HOSE

During the summer months, as kids we would play outside for hours each day. The freedom to imagine, climb trees, and get dirty are some of the best elements of childhood. Unfortunately, the constant in-and-out of the house and the numerous requests for water fill up those days as well. We would run inside for a drink of water. We would fill up a little plastic cup and made our way back outside. As we walked, water splashed out with each step. By the time we reached the backyard, there was hardly any water left. Within minutes, we were thirsty again and returning for more. Although it certainly wasn’t an ideal way to quench our thirst, it was the only way we knew, so mom led us back outside and over to the water spigot. We listened intently as she explained that, with a turn of the knob, we could have unlimited water. No more trips back and forth with a tiny plastic cup.

When Jesus encountered the woman at the well, she was retrieving water the only way she knew how. It was normal for women to journey to the well before the heat of the day, completing a task that had to be performed over and over again if the families were going to have water. They knew no other way. But this woman was amazed when Jesus said there was another way. The water He offered was a never-ending source of life. While she was seeking water to satisfy physical needs, He was offering far more. Jesus was offering Himself.

There are times when I foolishly attempt to quench the thirst in my soul with a little plastic cup, when You, Lord, are the never-ending fountain. Only You can satisfy the longing in us. Graciously accept the Living water that Jesus offers us.
